Jesus said “as much as you have done it to the
least of these, my brothers and sisters, you have done it to me.” When we serve those in need, we serve our
Lord himself. St. John’s endeavors to
live out the Gospel imperative to engage in outreach to those beyond our church
property.
Youth Mission to Mexico: Each year our young people, together with supportive adults, travel to Rancho Santa Marta, a Christian residential school for disabled and special needs children in Baja California. During the week they spend there the young people engage in a variety of work projects to support the mission of Santa Marta. Participants raise their own funds for the trip through fund-raisers and general appeals for financial support.
“Habitat for Humanity”:
Habitat is a worldwide Christian outreach that builds homes with low-income
families. St. John’s has been pleased
to have participated in the past, and looks forward to taking part when the
next homes are built. Parishioners have
offered much needed labor to the projects, and have provided lunch and
devotions for the tired and hungry builders.
Holiday Assistance:
Holidays can be difficult times for those in need. At Thanksgiving and Christmas St. John’s parishioners purchase
food and prepare holiday baskets for families in need. At Christmas we adopt a family through the
United Way and provide food and presents for them to enjoy.
Esplanade House: Since
its inception our parish has supported this local effort to house families and
help them return to lives of self-reliance and self-respect. Material gifts are
brought to altar Sunday mornings and delivered to the house on Mondays. Some
members of our congregation have nurtured long-standing personal relationships
with particular individual residents.
United Thank Offering: Twice a year women of the church gather
offerings, which go to outreach programs of the diocese and the national and
international Anglican communions.
Diocese and National Church Outreach: Each year St. John’s forwards a significant
portion of its local income to the Diocese of Northern California, as do other
parishes, part of which supports Diocesan-wide ministries. Parts of these funds
also go the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A. for similar activities.
Community Meetings: Our facilities are available on a regular
basis for local non-profit groups including “12-step” programs.
