Discover St. John's

Outside side view

From time to time I bump into someone who speaks about how they “discovered” St. John’s: a chance detour up Floral Avenue, a community event on our grounds, or the first time on the Garden Tour.  I am regaled with comments about the verdant beauty of our setting, the wonderful playground, or the warm hospitality experienced.  For such folks our church is a “Place of Discovery”.  Similar sentiments are expressed when people connect more deeply with our congregational life.  Discoveries are made of greater opportunities to serve in Christ’s name, of stronger connections with a community of faith that supports and sustains, and of deeper knowledge and experience of God in worship and spiritual growth.

This is an invitation to know St. John’s to truly be a Place of Discovery.  Here you will find many opportunities to enter more deeply into what God is doing at our parish, whether it be worship and spiritual growth, fellowship with one another in Christ, or reaching out to those in need in Jesus’ name. May this parish be a Place of Discovery for you.

Grace and Peace,

Fr. Richard Yale

What is the Episcopal Church?

The Episcopal Church comes from the English Reformation of the 16th Century, when English Christians sought to renew and reform the Church. Our goal has always been to incorporate the best insights of Christian devotion and practice through the centuries.

We are Catholic: The Episcopal Church is grounded in the worship of God through the sacraments, especially Baptism and Communion (commonly called Eucharist). We are lead by bishops, who pass on the teaching of the Apostles, and by priests, who are the pastors of congregations.

We are Protestant: Our Church is grounded in the authority of the Bible. We are also Protestant, wherein we are open to the continuing reforming work of the Holy Spirit, drawing us into deeper faithfulness.

We are Traditional: We stand on the shoulders of the countless saints who have gone before us. Their life and practice as Christians inform the way we worship and serve our Lord. We honor the foundation that they have provided.

We are Contemporary: New times present new challenges. Our timeless faith demands that we discover new ways to express and live out our devotion to Jesus Christ. We face tomorrow with the confidence that the Spirit will lead the way.
